FOR FUN FRIDAY // All About Drapes
Adding drapes to a space is a great way to soften the look of the room. They can add texture, color, pattern, and warmth but let's also not forget they can also be used as a functional window treatment! The final product is beautiful, however hanging drapes is not as straight forward as it may seem, so we've outlined a few simple tips for you to follow.
Tip 1: Hang High
Hang your drapes as high as possible, typically 6"-12" above the window molding. This will make the room appear much larger than it actually is. Increasing the height also adds an element of formality and elegance.
Tip 2: Hang Wide
Extending the rod 10"-18" on each side past the window will trick the eye into thinking the window is larger. By creating more rod space on each side, the drapes won't be taking up valuable window space or interfering with the amount of light flowing into the room.
Tip 3: Think About the View
We're about to share a sneaky design trick with you...
The pattern and color of your drapes should depend on whether or not you want people to focus on the view outside. If your window faces a beautiful landscape or city view, you'll want simple neutral window treatments, allowing the eye to look straight through the window. But if your window faces a less appealing site, busy or patterned drapes are ideal, as this causes the eye to stop at the drapes and camouflages what's outside. Sounds strange, we know, but it works!
Tip 4: Train your Drapes
Training your drapes is the last step in achieving a designer worthy finish. It takes a little time and patience, but the end result is worth it. First, iron or steam the drapes after you remove them from the packaging. Next, fold them how you want them to lay. Loosely tie them at the top, middle, and bottom on each side and let them be for 2-3 weeks (we know, that's a long time!). After they have been properly "trained," remove the ties and enjoy perfectly stacked drapes!
