So clearly, every family room needs a couch, maybe a couple big cozy armchairs, and a bench or a few poufs to catch tired little bodies throughout the day.  Being moms of small, active, playdoh loving kids, we are HUGE FANS of Leather. We have a cushy Chesterfield style leather couch filled with pillows that we have had for almost 5 years now, and can honestly say, the leather gets better with time, messes are practically invisible and super easy to clean AND the couch looks effortlessly stylish while being incredibly family (and Dog) friendly.

Balancing a Room with Leather Accents

So now that we have sold you on the whole Leather idea, we'll share a few tips and tricks on how to use a leather couch or chairs in your family room set up.  The key to using these pieces is BALANCE. A beautiful deep brown or Cognac hued leather is a visually heavy piece and needs some lighter pieces around it to balance out the room.  Here are our tips for choosing the right pieces:

  • Choose either a leather couch OR leather accent chairs.
  • Balance it out with a lighter fabric option in the opposite pieces.
  • Choose a Rug Option that will contrast with the biggest piece in your room (i.e. dark couch- lighter rug, Light Couch - darker rug
  • Accent and contrast dark leathers with lighter pillows, textures and throws.
  • If you feel safer with a fabric couch, accent with leather pieces: leather poufs, architectural leather chairs or a tufted leather ottoman.
  • Mix with other natural textures like cowhides, rattans and woods for a rich and cozy feel.

Leather Goods Purchasing Tips

Some quick tips before making a big purchase on any leather item -- All leathers are definitely NOT created equal! Leather qualities can vary tremendously, and this is one category of furniture where we would say you definitely get what you pay for.  Watch out for inexpensive and cheaply made faux leathers.  Not only will they wear and tear much faster but they will also LOOK cheap in your room.  A good leather will withstand the test of time and is worth every penny of a splurge...this is coming straight from two young and growing families who have seen firsthand how well a good quality leather will hold up through the tough days of raising babies and puppies!

**If you buy leather products online, just a quick word of CAUTION : Be sure the return policy/exchange policy is in your favor should you not be happy with the product quality, that way you won't be stuck with a bad purchase you can't return!
